New Year, Same God / Nature Devotional

“Before the mountains were born, or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

Psalm 90:2

The years may change, but God remains the same

Boom. Should I end it there?

Okay, maybe not because there are a few more things I want to talk about with you.

It seems like everything around us is constantly changing—seasons, relationships, careers, music, clothing trends, and even our desires.

If there’s one thing we can be confident in, it’s that things are going to change.

But do you know what else we can be confident in? That God never changes. He remains constant, even when nothing else in our life does.

The other day I heard “Seasons Change” by United Pursuit for the first time, which is the perfect song for this topic.

The song goes like this:

"Though the music changes
And the songs we sing
We still lift our praises to our loving God and King
Though the seasons change
Your love remains"

Isn’t that beautiful?

“Though the seasons change, your love remains.” Man, that chorus gives me goosebumps because it’s so true.

Winter may turn to spring and spring to summer, but God’s love, faithfulness, and desire for us will never outgrow the season we find ourselves in.

This is such good news!

Why? Because as the world constantly changes around us, our hearts are yearning for a constant – something, or Someone, that doesn’t change.

I don’t know about you, but change can be exhausting for me.

In 2022, I experienced a butt load of changes – launching Close to Creation, getting married, starting rv life, and so much more. While all these things were exciting and amazing, they were draining at times.

Then during all those significant changes, I also was trying to eat healthier, exercise more, learn how to be a good wife, and figure out what clothing style I want to have as a young adult, all while trying to grow spiritually. Whew, just thinking back on all that makes me tired now!

In Hebrews 13:8, the writer declares that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

I love that the same Jesus I read about in my Bible is the One who wants to be present in the constant change happening in my life. He’s the same Jesus who healed countless people and showed compassion thousands of years ago, but He also wants to heal and show compassion toward me TODAY.

He’s the same Jesus who loves me so deeply that He would sacrifice Himself for me.

And this isn’t only true for me. It’s true for you too, friend.

If God is everlasting, like our verse for today says, then we know Jesus is too.

I know the whole Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) can be confusing to some, but what I want you to get from this post is that God remains the same no matter what perspective we’re looking at Him from – Father, Son, or Holy Spirit.

We can find hope in the fact that He will never change like the latest trends or change His mind as quickly or consistently as we do.

He is constant. He is consistent. He is unchanging. And His love for you and me will never change.

Questions to Think About:

  1. What changes happened in your life in 2022?
  2. How did these changes make you feel? Excited? Anxious? Frustrated?
  3. Did these changes affect your view of God? Did you ever think His goodness, forgiveness, and love changed as much as your circumstances?
  4. Psalm 90:2 tells us that God is everlasting. What does that mean for you?
